When Good Manners Get Left at the Gate Posted: 6 months ago by nateebiinature
"...She put it on her lap and proceeded to unwrap it, and — I kid you not — it wasa huge hunk of cooked bacon. I know there are liquid restrictions. Aren’t there bacon restrictions, too?

I'll be flying on Friday... I can only hope the person I sit next to pulls out a huge hunk of crispy bacon!

Bacon should be part of the normal "freebies" on a plane...free water, free soda, free chunks of cooked bacon.

While I agree it makes for aggravating travel when people are inconsiderate of others, I hate self righteous manner police.

It's not enough that he goes around correcting the ill mannered, he has to tell the whole world about it. "Look at me I'm manner man!"

dink. Yeah I'm talking to you LARRY WINGET. You're a dink.

I'm not sure what a dink is... but if he is one... it's only because he didn't appreciate the hunk of bacon... :)

Dink in this usage can be defined as a slanderous comparison to a male human sex organ.

for clarification, There are no other uses.

In my humblest of opinions, there are usually a few reasons for behavior people quirk a brow at

most of the time, I'd venture it's pure obliviousness. (I'm sorry, I didn't really think bacon had a strong odor away from the cooking source!)

other times, there is 'more to the story' - (Lady on cell phone was talking to senile aunti with a bad connection and it was imperative she get the number)

and yet another would be fear - especially in travel situations, anxiety can run high, you're alone. Perhaps even subcontiously people may act out to be remembered "in case" of whatever the boogie man might be.

what might the author's excuse might be for thinking he's got the run of polite society?
...the jury is still out.

the only one who was rude and obnoxious was the a*****e who wrote this. The fact that the paper gave him a venue to whine is sad.

The real problem here isn't the M&Ms... or the bacon... or the passenger with the attitude towards the flight attendant...

But that outfit. It's louder than the woman with the cell phone.

I can understand people being upset about people who are self-righteous, but he's not spouting dogma here...he's just providing a human interest piece. Not everything in journalism is about world events of great significance, and the fact that you read it seems to cast some validity that you were at least interested.

I personally think it's appropriate to correct someone's behavior if sufficient time has passed that the person ought to have known better, and it's in their power to do so. It could be risky of course given some peoples sense of entitlement and the possibility they may not appreciate (violently) your opinion, but if I was on the plane and that woman was sitting near me, and this guy told her to shut it, I'd be thankful (although I might have done it my myself anyway).

this is what prevents me from ever saying anything, because who should know what? who are we to decide that someone should or shouldn't "know better" or if they have the capacity to make any changes.
