But then, I usually listen on random play. And buy soundtracks, so I get a mix of artists and songs. Then when I find an artist I like, I get their albums.

Once discussed it with a similar minded friend - being both able to remember the advent of portable music we were taking a moment to marvel at the new found ability to carry around a pretty decent music library in a box about the size of a cigarette packet (MP3 players were that big back then, kids).
We were talking about the "etiquette" of such a device and found that we both were of the opinion that copying over individual tasks wasn't really a viable option - you put the entire album on there or not at all. Likewise if you needed to make room there was no deleting that awkward filler track that came in half way through side two. Either you got rid of the whole album or the whole album stayed.
Probably not that common a view now, but that to me is just the way it should be.I agree, actually. Though it was unfortunate for me, because my first MP3 player had a measly 32 MB on it, barely enough to fit a full album (unless it was a half album). So I was forced to pick and choose songs. I kept using my CD player for several years after it, though, and mainly used the MP3 for individual songs that I did not have a full album for, or for carrying around tracks that I produced (as I was getting into that around that time).]]>

They used to be thought of as albums, and the songs were the building blocks of them. For instance, for years people would talk about things like Pink Floyd's The Wall. I also have been listening to alot of industrial strangeness like Ministry and Faderhead.
I've also been listening to Sly and the Family Stone, which was sort of like a proto-funk band, as they basically played very funk like music before funk existed. Here is a great song by them.
