I started this thread so there is a place for Plimates to post a song they like and its cover(s)/original and discuss their opinions.
I love listening to music. I like listening to covers of songs. Sometimes I think the newer version is much worse than the original, or much better, or so unique that it seems as though they are different songs.
The song that made me start this thread is Big Hard Sun.
While I enjoy Eddie Vedder's cover, I prefer Indio/Peterson's original. The first time I heard the song it gave me shivers, even though it was just sung by a few people around a campfire with a guitar. Vedder changed a few lyrics for his cover, and IMO it kind of changes the meaning of the song. Either version is still excellent, IMHO.
Recently, Shiny Toy Guns covered this song, and I definitely prefer the cover, though it could be because I love Shiny Toy Guns :) The cover is so upbeat that it makes me want to dance, and I love dancing!
I have an entire CD I burned with nothing but remakes: (the ones in BOLD I think the remake is better than the original)
Feel Like Making Love (originally by Bad Company) as recorded by Dangerous Toys. Video Killed the Radio Star (org by the Buggles) as recorded by Presidents of the USA Mama Said Knock You Out (org by LL Cool J) as recorded by Scatterbrain Mama We're All Crazy Now (org by Slade) as recorded by Mama's Boys Up Around the Bend (org by CCR) as recorded by Hanoi Rocks Sweet Dream (org by Eurythmics) as recorded by Marilyn Manson Low Rider (org by War) as recorded by Exodus Summer Breeze (org by Seals and Crofts) as recorded by Type O Negative You Spin Me Round (org by Dead or Alive) as recorded by Dope Cinnamon Girl (org by Neil Young) as recorded by Type O Negative Shout 2000 (org by Tears for Fears) as recorded by Disturbed Good Times Roll (org by Cars) as recorded by Powermain 2000 Turn the Page (org by Bob Seger) as recorded by Metallica New York Grove (org by Hello) as recorded by Ace Frehley
There have been several instances recently where I've thought of starting a thread, not got round to in and then in a couple of days someone else does.
This is just one more example of that synching feeling.
So to join in I'll start off with this from The Ronettes:
Brief history lesson for those who care about such things. Even without knowing I think most people would realise this is a Phil Spector production. Some people might think it's Mark Ronson but those people need beating with a stick marked "Musical History". For my money it's the pinnacle of this trademark "Wall Of Sound". It has a poignancy to those who know its meaning. Phil Spector could be summed up with the following words - "One time musical genius, full time ass-hole". He wife Ronnie led and gave her name to The Ronettes. Towards the end of their marriage in a moment of epiphany he wrote IWINSTS to try and express how he felt about the rest of his life being inevitably without her. It was his own fault, and if you want to know what kind of monster Phil was then I'm sure the internet will tell you. Sometimes something beautiful can come out of something so brutal.
And on to the cover.
Beth Orton, proponent of the minority genre folktronica took this song and stripped it back to it's barest possible bones in this - both versions send shivers down my spine, but for different reasons.

Mint Royale grabbed hold of the song, and turned it into something so different that it is almost a completely different song. I like it, too, not as a cover but as a new song.
edit: I can keep going with the type o covers, they're well done, even the cover of 'Angry Inch' from Hedwig and the Angry Inch is hilariously awesome.
