'Golden Girls' star Bea Arthur dies at 86
LOS ANGELES - Beatrice Arthur, the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star in the hit shows "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" and who won a Tony Award for the musical "Mame," died Saturday. She was 86.

Oh dear. :( RIP, indeed. She was always one of my favorite actresses. I loved her in History of the World.

A tribute:

Maude was not afraid to take on the bigger issues of the day such as this classic episode which had the 47-year old Maude finding out she was pregnant and deciding eventually on getting an abortion due to her age. This was in the early 70's before Roe v Wade was decided.

So odd that I was thinking about The Golden Girls just the other day, and how much I enjoyed that show. I love each one of those characters and the actresses who played them. She was an amazon and a great talent. RIP Ms. Arthur.

I got drunk with Bea Arthur, her companion and Peter one night at a bar somewhere around 58th St and 5th Ave in NYC. This was back in the early 80's probably. She was very gracious, witty, and enjoyed our company as much as we enjoyed hers. This makes me very sad.

Oh. Em. Gee.

Yesterday hubby and I were chatting, he told me of an album he saw online of a heavy metal tribute to ABBA. I was telling him of my favorite 'Malcolm in the Middle' episode where Bea was babysitting Dewey, and they were having a fabulous time, while the background music playing was 'Fernando'.

At the end, she died....

And now I'm crying again....

Bea's character 'Maude', although a ballbreaker, was a great example of crusty old womanhood for all the young feminists in the 70's. She always played a powerful character, and she always did it in memorable ways.

I was and am a fan, even if you tease me over it. Or f**k me with HER penis....

Rest, you great dame. You will always have the love of strong people!

Such powerful episodes, and considering the era they were originally performed, courageous!

The show was even spoofed on Family Guy, so you know it was a historic thing...
